THE WINE CELLAR

Some spaces are designed to impress. Others are designed to be lived in. This bespoke wine room achieves both - combining warm industrial textures, refined craftsmanship, and thoughtful sustainability to create a space that feels intimate, luxurious, and timeless.

At Opuskala, we believe great design isn't just about creating something new - it's about recognising the potential in what already exists. This project is a perfect example of that philosophy.

A warm industrial palette

The foundation of the room is its beautifully textured brick feature wall, which immediately introduces warmth and character. Rather than feeling rustic, the brick is balanced with matte black finishes, natural oak shelving, and rich cognac leather seating to create a contemporary, masculine aesthetic. Above a glass ceiling, allowing the wine cellar to be viewed from the dining space above.

The colour palette is intentionally restrained:

• Warm red and brown brick adds depth and texture.

• Matte black cabinetry creates contrast and sophistication.

• Natural timber softens the space and introduces warmth.

• Ambient lighting ties every material together with a welcoming glow.

The result is a room that feels equally suited to quiet evenings with a glass of wine or entertaining friends.

Designing around atmosphere

Lighting was one of the most important elements of this project. Instead of relying on bright overhead illumination, layered lighting creates mood and highlights the architecture of the room.

Integrated LED lighting within the shelving transforms each niche into a display, while directional wall lighting accentuates the texture of the brickwork and the wine collection itself. The contrast between shadow and warm light gives the room a boutique cellar feel without sacrificing comfort.

Every light source has a purpose: to showcase materials, enhance depth, and create an inviting atmosphere.

A sustainable design story

One of our favourite aspects of this project is something visitors often don't notice immediately.

The statement shelving wasn't built from scratch—it was thoughtfully repurposed from the previous layout. By redesigning and adapting the existing shelving system, we preserved quality materials while giving them an entirely new purpose and identity within the space.

This approach reduced waste, honoured the original craftsmanship, and allowed us to create a completely bespoke feature without unnecessary replacement. It's a reminder that sustainability and luxury can exist beautifully together.

Crafted for conversation

Beyond wine storage, this room was designed as a destination within the home. The pair of leather club chairs creates an intimate tasting corner, while the illuminated display shelving encourages the collection to become part of the interior design rather than something hidden away.

Every detail—from the floating bottle racks to the custom cabinetry and integrated wine crate storage—was designed to feel curated rather than cluttered.

This isn't simply a wine room. It's a space for slowing down, sharing stories, and celebrating craftsmanship.
